In general, early medieval medical texts were based on the writings of the ancient medical authorities, especially Hippocrates (b. c. 460, d. c. 375 BC) and Galen of Pergamum (b. 129, d. c. 216). Treatises attributed to Hippocrates date to the 5th and 4th centuries BC, and modern scholars have concluded ‘he’ was not a single person, but rather a group of physicians writing under the same name.
